Desktop Virtualisation

Desktop Virtualisation has been around for a long time and VMware was there at the beginning. VMware View now provides centralised virualisation of desktops so that they can be access internally or externally over using a variety of devices from a Mobile phone to another Desktop!

Provisioning of new Desktops for new or temporary users is as easy as increasing your defined desktop number from say 10 to 15 and VMware View will automatically provision a new desktop from your own organisation specific template using SYSPREP to add a unique name and add to Active Directory (if desired)

VMware View also gives users the ability to gain access to an internal desktop even if  they cannot get into the office whether a car won't start, too much snow or the wrong type of leaves on the line have your own a emergency preparedness policy with VMware View.

Provide high availability for your desktops within your virtualized environment without the cost or complexity of traditional clustering solutions and back them up nightly in the datacenter as a business process.

VMware View with VMware vSphere for Desktops lets you extend enterprise features such as vMotion, High Availability and Distributed Resources Scheduler to the desktop, ensuring an “always on” desktop. With VMware View you can:

  • Let your desktops take advantage of key features in the vSphere platform such as vMotion, High Availability, Dynamic Resource Scheduler and Consolidated Backup.
  • Access virtual desktop from a wide variety of devices over any network connection to ensure business continuity.
  • Quickly provision virtual desktops to remote users or groups of users in the event of a pandemic or catastrophic event when it is difficult for workers to access the office.
  • Keep desktops running even when server hardware goes down with automated failover and recovery.
  • Shift desktop computing resources automatically as user needs and application loads change with dynamic load balancing.
  • Give remote users a high performance desktop experience with VMware View with PCoIP while protecting access to sensitive data.

Another benefit of desktop virtualisation is the ability to consolidate your personal firewall and Anti-Virus services.

The VMware vShield software suite provides sophisticated internal firewalling between your virtualised server, vShield Zones which comes with vSphere Advanced and above will provide basic firewall protection and vShield vApp can also be purchased to add more protection still.

VMware vShield Endpoint provides a platform for 3rd party Anti Virus companies to scan your virtualised desktops or servers without the need to install an Anti-Virus agent taking away one of the major headaches of running a Windows OS. The basic principal is that you build a dedicated virtualised AV server which communicate with the vSphere hypervisor via a vShield Endpoint kernel module, this allows scanning for virus and malware threats at the hypervisor layer before the threat even reaches the virtual machine.
