ST-FOUR The home of quality IT Consultancy at reasonable prices

Network Infrastructure

As a company we like to go for best of breed products and for the cost, quality, functionality and ease of use we prefer HP ProCurve switches.

We don't really want to go into great detail about switches as, lets face it, there has been little new of ground breaking merit in the technology in the last 10 years however although it's not exactly new one thing I would like to talk about as it is now more relevant than ever is 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE)

So why is 10GbE now more relevant, basically it's a number of factors:

  • Cost - The price of 10GbE is finally approaching that of 10/100/1000.
  • SAN's - iSCSI SANs running at 1GB are not, in our opinion, Enterprise level, 10GbE changes this and put iSCSI SANs on a more equal footing with Fibre SANs
  • Virtualisation - With so many virtual servers running per physical box and even more virtual desktops faster network throughput is needed to cater for bandwidth requirements, 10GbE meets this need.
